I'm particularly interested in causal inference and interpretable models. Black-box algorithms are great at finding patterns and predicting outcomes, but they often do so without advancing our understanding of why things happen. I'm much more interested in developing statistical methods that can actually explain the underlying mechanisms to better inform public health policy.
I grew up in Fort Wayne, Indiana and spent a lot of time with my parents, younger sister, younger brother, and youngest sister. I don't play as much these days, but occasionally sit down to learn something new. In high school, I also played clarinet in the concert band and mellophone in the marching band.
During college, I had a phase where I read Anti-Oedipus by Deleuze and Guattari (huge mistake, part manic philosophy and part the French tradition of just making stuff up to sound smart) and used to argue that free will isn't real. I still don't think belief in free will is justified, but I rarely bring it up anymore, mostly cause it's hard to convey without just sounding fatalist and also it just isn't a very interesting debate. Reading the work of thinkers like Camus, Marx, bell hooks, Foucault, and Adorno, however, definitely stuck with me and shaped how I view the world.
Depending on how busy I am, I like to get outside to run or bike. I rode BMX for a couple of years in high school, but eventually stopped after breaking some fingers. Normally I'm quite risk averse, but for some reason didn't have a great sense of risk tolerance with BMX. I also got into road biking in college, really enjoyed it and ended up riding a fair amount.
I built this website because I wanted a place to share the things I watch, read, and listen to, along with projects like the procedurally animated spider. It's a fun way to document the things I spend my time on. Since so much of this site is just text and code, I put together a small slideshow below with some actual photos of me and my life.
